Athlete Development Program
Aspire Academy NZ – Athlete Development Program
Building the next generation of strong, confident, and resilient athletes.
The Athlete Development Program is Aspire Academy NZ’s cornerstone training pathway for youth athletes. It’s designed to give young sportspeople the physical foundations, technical skills, and safe training habits they need to perform at their best — not just this season, but for years to come.
We recognise that every age group develops differently, and that boys and girls have unique needs when it comes to training. That’s why this program is split into tailored groups — ensuring every athlete gets the right balance of challenge, support, and progression.

Group 1: Ages 10–12 – Introduction to Athlete Development
⏰ Time: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
The early teen years are a critical stage for coordination, balance, and movement quality. This group focuses on building the building blocks of athleticism in a fun, engaging, and supportive environment.
Athletes will learn to:
Move with better balance, control, and body awareness
Perform plyometric exercises to develop explosive jumping ability
Use ballistic movements to improve power in sport-specific skills
Understand and practise injury prevention strategies, including landing technique, core strength, and mobility work
Engage in games and challenges that make training enjoyable while reinforcing good movement patterns
This is about setting the foundation — giving young athletes the skills, habits, and confidence to transition into more advanced strength & conditioning in the years ahead.
Group 2: Ages 13+ Girls – Strength & Conditioning Foundations
⏰ Time: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
This group empowers young female athletes to safely and confidently progress into structured strength & conditioning. The focus is on building functional strength, speed, and power while reinforcing correct lifting technique and movement efficiency.
Training is individualised, meaning:
Every athlete works at a level appropriate for their current strength and skill
Exercises are tailored to their sport, needs, and physical readiness
Where suitable, athletes will be introduced to barbell training and more complex lifts in a safe, supervised environment
Program components include:
Progressive weight training with bands, medicine balls, free weights, and barbells
Foundational lifts for strength and injury prevention
Sprint and agility work to translate strength into on-field performance
Plyometric and core stability development
Education on recovery, training principles, and building gym confidence
The goal is to produce resilient, strong, and confident athletes who understand how to train smart, recover well, and perform at their best.
Group 3: Ages 13+ Boys – Strength & Conditioning Foundations
⏰ Time: 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
This group is for male athletes who are ready to move beyond general fitness and into targeted performance training. The aim is to develop strength, speed, agility, and power using age-appropriate methods and a clear progression pathway.
Training is individualised, so every athlete advances at their own pace:
Beginners will learn safe movement patterns and build a strength base
More experienced athletes will be challenged with barbell work and advanced lifting progressions
Coaches adjust load, complexity, and intensity for each athlete’s needs
Program components include:
Fundamental lifts with an emphasis on perfect technique
Strength development using bands, bodyweight, free weights, and barbells
Acceleration, deceleration, and change of direction drills for sports performance
Plyometric and ballistic exercises to improve explosive power
Education on safe lifting, recovery, and performance mindset
The goal is to prepare athletes for higher-level sport by building the physical attributes and mental discipline needed for success.
